You are not just trying to bait believers are you, as others have suggested? Are you truly seeking the truth?
For one thing the NIV is a false version, it is copyrighted man's paraphrases. You need to read The Authorized King James translation which is closest to the original meaning from Greek and Hebrew. The best would be Henry Morris's Commentary at ICR which explains each verse. Henry Morris was the best in understanding the Bible and science.
I noticed your bias, "It will not make me a believer, but at least it provides insight into how it should be understood." This is not an open mind which a true scientist is supposed to have. What has blinded you to the truth is what the Bible calls, "science falsely so called."
The objective sciences can be tested by repeatable experiments, and observed. This includes space exploration, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, etc. These are hard science. However, paleontology, archaeology, history, geology, etc. are soft sciences. They cannot be tested or observed. They are often supported by circumstantial evidence. They start with an assumption, then all facts are fitted to the hypothesis, which becomes a theory. This can be right or wrong. It depends on the bias of the person making the foundational assumptions.
Most secular scientists assume everything is natural, nothing supernatural. This is why establishment scientists claim there are no ghosts, disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle, no UFOs, or life after death. Atheists cannot accept anything that requires a supernatural cause. They cannot prove it did not happen, they simply reject it.
When it comes to origins both evolution and creation require paranormal miracles. God's Word says God is eternal, omnipotent, and omnipresent. God is not effected by time or space because he created them. He is outside this physical dimension and He has to be in order to create it. Time does not exist for God it is one of his creations. Man cannot explain what time is, man cannot explain what you are as a living sole.
Since God is not part of the physical universe of matter, which he created He is the only source for the physical universe, because physical things are continually being destroyed by entropy. Things wear out and break down, living things get old and die, energy is depleted. Since this is a fact, then it had to have a beginning.
The problem here is for the complex design in everything in the physical world, it has to have intelligence to create it. It cannot create itself when it doesn't exist. Intelligence is like fuel for an engine, it cannot run without it.
However, if the universe and life came about by a natural process there cannot be any intelligence. Unless you believe in the occult that there is an intelligence in nature itself Gaia. However, this is not science, there is no evidence of intelligence in nature.
As for evolution or natural process how do planets and stars come about by random matter exploded from a Big Bang come together when it exploded in all directions? And how come each planet has different elements in different amounts. How can some planets rotate one way and another rotate in the opposite direction? How come the moon is synchronized facing the earth with one side. And why doesn't it roll instead of having the same pole up. It is not rotating fast enough to create a gyroscope lock in position like the earth. How did life come from a primordial pool?

Now that has been said as a foundation, I will tackle the question you asked. You have taken this Bible quote out of context. Have you heard about Muslim families? When a family member becomes a Christian, the family is required by Sharia Law to kill that family member. Now this is not true everywhere in more civilized countries, but when a person becomes a Christian sometimes other family members will turn against them. Like in Mormon religion or Jehovah's witnesses, they are to shun that family member as a heretic and consider them dead. Catholics will say they are heretics to become a Protestant, and during the Spanish Inquisition the Vatican tortured and killed Christians as heretics. They will do this again during the Tribulation Period. The Jesuits were part of this. The Vatican still has an office of Inquisition and they will produce the False Prophet - who will be a Jesuit Pope of the Merovingian bloodline just like the Antichrist.
Jesus warns us that he does not bring Republicans and Democrats, or creation scientists and evolution scientists together, he separates the sheep from the goats. Not everyone will accept the truth and they must be removed so they will not contaminate Heaven and the New Earth. Just as we must not allow Terrorists, or unvented aliens to enter our country.
Usually it is the unbelievers that attack Christians, and of course pseudo-Christians. Christians do not attack unbelievers, we try to reach unbelievers with the truth if they are truly seeking truth. Jesus said, Seek and ye shall find, knock and it will be opened to you. And study to see if these things are so like the Bereans. Evolutionists and Democrats, etc. brain wash and ridicule led by Satan’s lies. Christians try to educate with the facts of the Bible and facts of science and realistic understanding of the real world.
