What is of particular importance is that this discovery extends the range of any dinosaurs far north of previous limits. The spot where the tracks were found is only about 800 miles from the North Pole. Before this discovery, the most northerly records for dinosaurs had been about 2500 miles from the Pole. It had long been known that dinosaurs were spread across the globe during Cretaceous times, but the discovery in Spitsbergen extended their northern range to much greater limits than previously suspected.
The northward extension of Cretaceous dinosaurs, interesting though it was in widening the recorded range of these reptiles during the height of their existence, raises certain questions about the environment and climate in which they lived.
We may assume, if our knowledge of modern reptiles has any bearing on reptiles long extinct, that the giant dinosaurs of Mesozoic times were tropical and subtropical animals, supported by tropical plants found with them. We may also assume that dinosaurs, like modern reptiles, were animals having no internal temperature controls; their body temperatures supposedly were closely correlated with the temperatures of their environments. If these assumptions are correct, the dinosaurs must have lived in tropical and subtropical climates, as do modern crocodiles. Certainly they were far too large to burrow underground to escape cold winters, as lizards and snakes do. So it seems probable that the footprints of large dinosaurs were made, and their bones were buried, in lands of perpetual summer now in the arctic.
Consequently, the discovery of Iguanodon tracks in Spitsbergen reinforced and even extended the idea, long held by many geologists and paleontologists, that the Cretaceous world was largely tropical.
Estimates vary about the giant flying reptile, some studies estimate the weight of the larger specimens discovered to exceed 500 pounds.[viii] That’s likely too much weight for a flying creature to bear and still be able to fly today. Several studies have investigated how these massive creatures could fly, with some reports even titled, “This Pterodactyl was so big it couldn’t fly” and opening sentences such as “Bad news dragon riders: Your dragon can’t take off.”[ix]
Scientists who have studied and published on this extensively have even admitted: “…it is now generally agreed that even the largest pterosaurs could not have flown in today’s skies” and have offered explanations such as “warmer climate” or “higher levels of atmospheric oxygen” as reasons it could have flown only during the era in which it lived.[x]
Some secular studies that have investigated air bubbles trapped in amber that was dated to the “ancient world in which dinosaurs lived,” have found both increased pressure as well as greater oxygen levels. The magazine New Scientist wrote, “One implication is that the atmospheric pressure of the Earth would have been much greater during the Cretaceous Era [rock system], when the bubbles formed in the resin. A dense atmosphere could also explain how the ungainly pterosaur, with its stubby body and wing span of up to 11 meters, could have stayed airborne.”[xi] https://genesisapologetics.com/faqs/pre-flood-world-what-was-it-like/ Here the Bible describes a cosmic shield from radiation that caused the earth to have a tropical environment worldwide, and evolutions also believe it was caused by a greenhouse effect with higher amounts of oxygen and CO2 that causes a greenhouse effect and plants to grow and produce more oxygen so it could sustain huge animals. Genesis 1:6-8, 'Then God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters." Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.' Pangea is the concept that all of the land masses of the earth were at one time connected as one giant super-continent. On a world map, some of the continents look like they could fit together like giant puzzle pieces (Africa and South America, for example). Does the Bible mention Pangea? Genesis 1:9 records, “And God said, ‘Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.’ And it was so.” All water was “gathered to one place,” the dry ground also all “in one place.” Genesis 10:25 mentions, “…one was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided…” Some point to Genesis 10:25 as evidence that the earth was divided after the Flood of Noah.
